This is a temporary position (less than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last less than 12 months but may be extended up to a total of 2 years based on agency needs and potential funding. Temporary positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.

The Biological Science Technician is responsible for managing daily operations including leading field activities, managing databases, analyzing data, writing annual reports, developing projects, obtaining permits, managing budgets, making fiscally responsible purchases, and ensuring a safe work environment. Additionally, as a mentor, the biotech provides assistance to interns and volunteers who are crucial to the success of the program.
One of the key initiatives of the program is removal of brown tree snakes and other avian predators from Asan Beach Park, which will facilitate restoration of native bird species. This program relies heavily on volunteer citizen scientists and requires a considerable amount of community outreach.
The natural resource program is also involved with monitoring coral reefs in the park for storm damage, crown of thorn starfish, and bleaching. The team conducts annual monitoring of the shallow reef flats and assists with surveys of reefs in the 10-20m depth range. The reef surveys are done on snorkel, and the team uses these occasions to train new staff on fish and coral identification, survey techniques, data analysis, and report writing. Other tasks include annual monitoring of streams, controlling invasive species like little fire ants and crown of thorn starfish, and restoring native vegetation.
The park also manages American Memorial Park on Saipan. While we don’t have a strong natural resource program on Saipan, the incumbent may be required to occasionally travel to Saipan to assist with restoration and other projects.
