One People One Reef (OPOR) is a California-registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit working with coastal communities to advance community-led marine conservation. Our programs support coral reef stewardship guided by local values, lived experiences, and diverse knowledge systems. OPOR works alongside local leaders, youth, scientists, and traditional knowledge holders to support communities in protecting their reefs and sustaining the well-being of their people. Position Summary

OPOR is seeking an experienced, strategic, and collaborative Managing Director to guide the organization through its next phase of growth and impact. This role supports the development, management, and implementation of community-led conservation programs while strengthening organizational systems to meet increasing regional needs. The Managing Director leads planning, execution, and evaluation of OPOR programs and operations, including administrative oversight, budgeting, fundraising support, partnership development, and team coordination. The role works closely with the Executive Director, Co-Director, program staff, and research partners and may include fieldwork, science team coordination, and report writing. This is a full-time, at-will, location-flexible position, funded for three years with potential for extension. It requires regular communication with OPOR leadership and partners, as well as periodic travel to program sites, conferences, and workshops. The Managing Director must be available during some Pacific Time and Guam Time working hours.

Key Responsibilities

Program Development & Management

● Design and implement programs aligned with OPOR’s mission and strategic goals.

● Collaborate with community partners, scientists, and local leaders to co-develop programming and research priorities that serve community-defined needs.

● Track program outcomes, assess effectiveness, and implement adaptive improvements based on data and community feedback.

Operations & Team Leadership

● Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring efficient program execution, compliance, and resource use.

● Develop and maintain organizational policies, procedures, and systems.

● Lead hiring, onboarding, supervision, mentoring, performance evaluation, and offboarding of collaborators and volunteers.

Financial & Grant Management

● Oversee program budgets, financial reports, and audits.

● Ensure grant timelines, deliverables, and reporting requirements are met.

● Collaborate on fundraising strategy, grant writing, donor cultivation, and securing program funding.

Community Engagement & Partnerships

● Maintain regular communication with community partners, ensuring programs reflect local priorities and values.

● Coordinate with collaborators to ensure cohesion across projects and alignment with grant and community deliverables.

● Represent OPOR at community events, meetings, and professional gatherings.

Experience & Strengths

● Experience managing programs, projects, teams, or partnerships in nonprofit, conservation, or community-based initiatives

● Experience working in multicultural or cross-cultural environments

● Commitment to integrating scientific research with local and traditional knowledge to support communities and ecosystems

● Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills

● Collaborative, adaptable, and able to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment

● Personal integrity, credibility, and commitment to biocultural conservation

● Passion for inclusive environments that honor diverse backgrounds and multiple ways of knowing

● Experience coordinating projects or teams across geographic locations or time zones

Compensation

● Funding & Renewal: Funding for this position is secured for three years. The position is reviewed annually and renewable within this period. While the role is at-will, OPOR anticipates continuity for the full funding period whenever feasible. Continuation beyond three years depends on future funding availability.

● Salary: $71,000–$76,000 annually, plus a stipend supporting benefits (commensurate with experience).
